Cohere, a high-profile AI enterprise outside the realms of OpenAI and Anthropic, reached a staggering $5.5 billion valuation in July. The company, co-founded by an author of the influential ‘Attention Is All You Need’ paper, is a key player in the large language model (LLM) movement. Cohere, based in Toronto and San Francisco, caters to enterprise customers with AI solutions, but lacks a popular consumer chatbot.

Despite Anthropic making recent news for its agreement with Palantir and AWS to sell AI to defense customers, TechCrunch has revealed that Palantir is also in partnership with Cohere. Additionally, several of Palantir’s customers, though unnamed, are already utilizing Cohere’s models according to a video released by Palantir.

The video, taken from Palantir’s inaugural developer conference, DevCon1, in November 2024, shows Cohere’s active involvement with Palantir’s clients. Cohere engineer and ex-Palantir employee, Billy Trend, expressed his excitement about working with Palantir during the presentation.

While Trend didn’t disclose any specific customers, he mentioned a deployment of Cohere’s AI with a Palantir client that has stringent data storage restrictions and a need for Arabic inference; a task Cohere is proficient at.

Palantir’s clients can utilize Cohere’s latest AI models via ‘compute modules’ in Foundry, one of Palantir’s flagship platforms. This platform leans more towards commercial customers, suggesting Cohere’s AI could be used by corporations.

Palantir is known for its collaborations with large enterprises like Airbus, but it also maintains a close relationship with U.S defense and intelligence agencies. Although Cohere has announced partnerships with tech giants like Fujitsu, it has remained silent about its dealings with Palantir.

When asked about its AI’s military or intelligence-related uses and its policy towards these types of deployments, Cohere chose not to comment. Palantir also did not provide an immediate comment. Meanwhile, OpenAI is being utilized by defense tech as well, recently announcing a deal with Anduril.
